Veterinarians
Dr. Maire Mahanes, DVM
I have been a resident of Charlottesville off and on over the last 45 years since attending undergraduate school at the University of Virginia. After graduating from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, I pursued small animal Veterinary practice in North Carolina. It was an invaluable experience. However, Charlottesville called, and we returned. After practicing here for another 4 years, I opened Charlottesville Cat Care Clinic in 1993. It was undoubtedly the best decision I could have made. Our clients are amazingly caring and responsive. The cats are always challenging and keep me on my toes. Our staff is unparalleled in dedication and performance.
My family at home currently consists of my husband, Forrest, our twins, Ike and Emmy, as well as our cats (Nacho and Snacky) and dogs (Copper, Bubbles and Eva). My oldest son, Ryan is here in Charlottesville with his beautiful wife Kelly and son Rhys. Wyatt has returned from Oregon with his fantastic fiancée, Kayla to attend nursing school. Charlottesville has proven to be a wonderful place to be a veterinarian and raise a family. I am so pleased to be able to do both with such community support.

Assistants
Angela Polaro, Head Assistant
Angela Polaro likes to refer to coming back to work here at Cat Care as “coming home”. She was previously a part of our Cat Care family from 1997-2012 and has recently returned in the fall of 2021.
There is no area of the clinic that she is a stranger to, she currently is our head assistant and in charge of boarding patients. She also does grooming and reception work when needed.
Angela has two teenage sons and two kitties. She enjoys cooking and puzzling.
Marika Mann, Assistant
Marika works behind the scenes at Cat Care. On weekends, you will find her taking care of the boarders and helping with odds and ends to ensure things run smoothly. She loves being able to help the cats feel a little more comfortable while away from their own homes. Marika also pet sits on occasion and enjoys working with many different animals. In her spare time, she loves watching a movie with her husband Duncan, her kitty Tristan.

After several years of travel nursing, including a 6-month stint at UVA in 2017, Angie and her husband, James, returned in 2023 to accept a permanent position at UVA as they fell in love with C’ville. She also enjoys cooking, wreath making, scrapbooking, reading, and spoiling any animal that she encounters.
